I am officially a business owner. I have taken the plunge and I have started Angela Roy Consulting Inc. (very creative name, I know). I was hesitant to do this. I thought of every reason not to start a business. But every day there would be another sign, another business needing help, another acquaintance asking if I would be interested in working with them - I couldn't ignore it. As 'new-agey' as it sounds, I had to listen to the universe, quit resisting it and surrender to what was being put in front of me.
If you asked me 10 years ago if I ever thought this is where I would be, I would have said with confidence, "no way". From the outside looking in I have had a great career so far. I was lawyer in private practice at a great firm, I worked as in house legal counsel with a start-up company and had the chance to transition into an executive management role, but now - business owner.
I always thought that after I finished law school I would settle into a nice 'conventional' legal career - because that is what you are supposed to do. I soon realized I was anything but conventional. I just didn't fit the mold. Luckily for me, my career path aligned with how I was feeling. For the past 5 years I have worked with an amazing team of people doing something innovative and different. This experience sparked something within me.
Working with a start-up and innovating everyday I finally felt excited and engaged about the work I was doing. I was given the chance to use my legal and business education in a creative way to build something new. Working on projects that were industry changing and unconventional made me feel like I found the place where I belonged - and this is where I want to stay.
It took me 8 years to figure out, but I want to feel the gratification that comes with proving that different can be good. I have experienced what it feels like to build something from the ground up, to overcome legal challenges and create the groundwork for a successful business. I recognize that I am most engaged when I am collaborating with other creative people to change the status quo. And this is what I want to keep doing.
