Entrepreneurs are visionaries. They have these plans or ideas that will fill the gap in the market, or to create a product that everybody needs. They are driven by this passion that their idea is not only profitable but great. But a lot of the time, the visionary does not have the skill set to actually execute. Visionaries are creative minds that think abstractly and visually and don’t often think sequentially or logically. They often need a balance or counterpart to structure execute on their idea.
Visionaries are the catalyst behind long-term growth, they allow companies to continuously adapt and refine their products. Executors are those that will put strong operations in place. That will organize a company and bring calm to what could be chaos.
Look at Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer for example. Bill Gates was the visionary behind Microsoft. He helped it stay ahead of the curve by continuously envisioning improvements for the company to stay ahead of the consumer demand with the execution being led by Steve Ballmer. When Steve Ballmer took over as CEO in 2000, he brought operational excellence to the company that resulted in quarter over quarter increases, but only for a short time until the market caught up and the vision had been abandoned.
Or Apple. Steve Jobs is the visionary, but he had world-class executives in each operating department to bring his vision and ideas to life. Executors value stability, process and repeatable execution. Having this in place for a company allows the visionary to continue creating and refining their ideas with the confidence that the executor will adapt the same process to obtain repeatable execution of whatever the widget or idea is.
