$1,500.00 for a Yoga Mat? The Luxury Mat that is made from a Football.
November 15, 2016
When I saw a headline on Inc.com about a “premium” yoga mat selling for $1,500.00, I had to learn more. Then I read on. I could not believe it. Cedric Yau, founder of BallerYoga has created a product that uses football grade leather to create an essential piece of yoga practice: the mat.
Yau made his vision for a luxury yoga mat (with a price tag of $495-$1,500) come to life with a mat that resembles a giant football. With all the details you would expect from a football yoga mat: white lacing, pebbled leather and brawny brown colour. Now, Yogi’s everywhere can rejoice knowing that they are able to practice in luxury….on a football.
BallerYoga was created because Yau saw a gap in the market. He was at a luxury 5 star yoga retreat in Bali and was unimpressed with the “cheap, slippery, low quality” mats that were provided. And that is when the idea for the football inspired yoga mat was born: practicing yoga at his luxury retreat on the white sand beaches of Bali.
As I was reading I was in disbelief. I thought it was a joke so I went to the website (www.balleryoga.com). As I searched through, my questions were answered. On the FAQ page, in bold lettering:
“Q: Is this product for real? Yes, it is real. And it is fantastic.”
Ok, so it is not a joke. But something just doesn’t feel right about it. How do you reconcile this animal based product with the principle of the yogic principle of ahimsa - or, do no harm?
Regardless of my personal stance on this mat, I do have to hand it to Cedric Yau– it has people talking and isn’t that what effective marketing is all about?
